My amalgam experience
Do you know what is dental amalgam? Amalgam is an alloy (mixture) of half mercury and half other various metals used in dental practise to act as some sort of cement to cover the hole in human teeth. The picture below is an example of a teeth which was plastered with amalgam to cover the hole.
There are some quarters defending the use of amalgam in dental rectification. Common sense tells us that mercury is not suitable to be placed in human mouth. M-E-R-C-U-R-Y. is a dangerous and neurotoxin element. Some might simply call this amalgam filling as silver filling because of it's silvery physical appearance. Mercury, you should note is the second most toxic element only after plutonium. Taking a risk to put something as dangerous as mercury into your mouth, of all places... is rather puzzling at best.
Do you ever had an amalgam in your teeth? I got one of my teeth amalgamated on 31 August 2013. It was done by my very own sister who is a dentist. At that time I have little knowledge about amalgam. After living with amalgam for about 5 months, I have decided (and acted) that I must remove this element from my mouth.
So finally, yesterday I successfully removed my amalgam. It was done by a local dentist in a dental clinic in Petaling Jaya. I feel relieved now. It's not that I hate amalgam. Amalgam is fine with me but...
after looking at some horrible things about mercury amalgam video on YouTube just like the one here telling about the dangers of amalgam, I think I should do something about my amalgam.
Do I get sick or any illness after my teeth plastered with amalgam?
Look, I am a fit healthy adult at a tender age of 35. I already have two kids. So the day I got amalgamated I did thought that I will be OK because my sister surely knew she was doing. At that time I still don't view the provided video and my knowledge about dental filling is limited at best. I already have a good life with two great kids so I should be brave enough to take risk such as giving my trust to a dentist?
In general I don't have any illness. I still could play my favorite sport table tennis. I still could think clearly though sometime I forgot small things such as where is my key or handset. I still could have a good, full and hard erection. My sex life is still OK. But... only I got asthma every now and then. At one time the asthma got so bad that I feel like dying if I'm not doing anything, seriously.
I'm not sure whether my asthma got something to do with my amalgam. I got asthma way before my teeth is amalgamated. But since there is a dentist who could remove my amalgam and replace it with composite material, why not? After all, it is only one tooth and I think that amalgam is not too big. The only concern that I have is whether it is safe to remove amalgam by drilling back those mercury into bits. Mercury is the main item that makes me worry.
When the removing is done the dentist injects me with anesthetic. There was also no rubber dam. I feel nervous but I just go on act like a strong guy. Luckily the procedure is not that long. Not more than 15 minutes I estimate. The pain is not much and I could almost say it is way too easy for me to endure because all these while I overestimate the pain that I might go through. After some inspiration from Adrian Van Oyen, I think we should be brave enough to face anything in life. Face the fear and say F*** Y**.
The charge is RM 200. But now I am happy and relieved. There was no more mercury inside my mouth. That should be OK by me, no matter what American Dental Association want to tell, let them be.
Perhaps you are wondering why this amalgam practice is not banned although some European countries have already banned this amalgam practise. American Dental Association said that amalgam is generally safe. In many parts of the world amalgam is still seen as the best way to correct your dental damage. The reason behind this is economic. It is sad you know, when profit is the main motivation of so many human being instead of safety and common sense.
